{"id":379,"date":"2017-06-12T11:37:51","date_gmt":"2017-06-12T11:37:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rohrzim.org\/?p=379"},"modified":"2017-06-12T11:37:51","modified_gmt":"2017-06-12T11:37:51","slug":"rohr-zimbabwe-celebrates-international-womens-day-in-manchester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rohr-zimbabwe.org\/index.php\/2017\/06\/12\/rohr-zimbabwe-celebrates-international-womens-day-in-manchester\/","title":{"rendered":"ROHR ZIMBABWE CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN\u2019S DAY IN MANCHESTER"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ROHR ZIMBABWE CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN\u2019S DAY IN MANCHESTER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By Panyika Karimanzira 10th March, 2013<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>United by one passion, <strong>human rights<\/strong>, Zimbabweans of different political persuasions and from different parts of the United Kingdom converged at The Cathedral Gardens, central Manchester to celebrate this year\u2019s International Women\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a refreshing show of maturity, men and women who are members of MDC and ZAPU took part in the celebrations, organized by Restoration of Human Rights (ROHR) Zimbabwe on Saturday 9<sup>th<\/sup> March, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the cold and damp, they waved placards with messages ranging from \u201cWe fight for gender equality\u201d to \u201cLeaders don\u2019t change women like socks\u201d and occasionally broke into song. Some of the placards read \u201cWe fight for gender equality\u201d, \u201cTreat women prisoners with dignity\u201d, \u201cGender equality for Zimbabwean women\u201d and \u201cWomen must be treated with respect\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The placards attracted a lot of attention from members of the public, some of whom came to express their appreciation of the demonstrators\u2019 efforts in driving the gender equality message home. Some locals also joined in and waved placards with the group.<\/p>\n<p>Asked why men were taking part in an apparent women\u2019s event, the Vice Chairperson of Manchester branch of ROHR Zimbabwe, who also happens to be the Chairperson of MDC\u2019s Manchester branch had this to say \u201cGender equality issues are human rights issues and we are here to show our solidarity with women and to show the world that we are for the equality of women to men. Every human being has the same rights regardless of gender\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Nokutula Ncube, the Secretary for Arts &amp; Culture for Europe Province of ZAPU said she had travelled all the way from London to take part in this event.
